When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
